Volunteering at AnimalsTaiwan

What You Can do to Help

Animals Taiwan is always looking for volunteers and we know that lots of you want to help out, but it’s sometimes confusing as to exactly what you can do to contribute. That’s why we’ve decided to bring it all together. So no matter what your interests or skills and however much time you have to commit to helping out – there is bound to be something here to appeal. Please have a look at our volunteer options and if anything catches your eye contact , our volunteer coordinator.

Skills
For those who have certain skills that could be beneficial to helping the organization, there is always something you can do. These could be technical skills that could help with the website; or any experience in areas such as publicity, accounting, writing, education, translating or even practical areas such as carpentry for work at the holding center. Often drivers are also required for transporting animals/materials/merchandise to events.

Committee Coordinators/Members
For those who have quite a bit of time and are looking to really get involved and take on responsibility, then perhaps you can take an active role in one of the committees. As we are trying to expand our work at the moment, and take a more structured approach, there are two areas that we could really do with volunteers; that is with adoptions and education. Although we have had many adoption successes, there is always more that can be done. Work includes; registration of animals, creating/writing profiles and posters, placing posters and info on websites, and matching those interested in adoption to suitable animals (this requires time commitment to be familiar with the animals). Post adoption there is also a certain amount of follow up checking to do.

The aim of the education committee is to provide education on CNR (Catch Neuter Release) projects, why to adopt rather than buy animals from pet shops, and different aspects of responsible pet ownership. Work in this area is at the moment fairly undeveloped so you have the chance to be fundamental in setting up projects. Future plans include creating lesson plans for English workshops on these issues, and becoming more actively involved with community organizations, groups and schools. This may appeal to those with teaching experience, and really requires enthusiastic, pro-active volunteers. We also want to do more networking with other groups with similar aims and doing similar work.

Two hours a week/occasional help
If you can just afford a couple of hours a week, then there are several options.
1. Become a Committee Member: With a couple of hours a week you can act as a committee member and help the coordinators with jobs such as those above. We also have people working in publicity, animal sponsorship, and events.

2. Help out at the Holding Center: For those more interested in hands on help, why not volunteer at the holding center in Shilin? If you can come on a regular basis – anything from two hours a week, at the same time each week – you can help with the regular routine of feeding, washing, and giving any medicine to the animals. At any one time, we also have up to 50 dogs waiting for a walk. As well as exercise, dog walking helps establish the owner/dog dynamic – making it easier for dogs to find homes later. There is a river side park over the road providing a nice walking environment. In our cat house, there are also cats looking for more cuddles.

3. Volunteer at an Event: AnimalsTaiwan holds two regular events; at Grandma Nittie’s in Shida on a Sunday, and in Tienmu on every other Saturday. These run from 4pm till close around 10pm and are manned on a shift basis. You can volunteer for these or other AT events on an occasional basis.

4. Sponsor an Animal: Don’t forget it is also possible to help through sponsorship. For NT$500 a month you can choose to sponsor one of the animals, leaving general funding available for education and promoting long term projects.

Our Volunteers--Claire Tyrrell
Although I was aware of Animals Taiwan for some time, it was when I decided to help out a little stray cat that I first really looked in to what they were doing. I had taken the kitten to the vet on a couple of occasions, and he had come to the conclusion that I was his new mummy. To be honest I wasn't so convinced of the idea, and was hoping that Animals Taiwan would offer a solution as to what to do with the cat. However, as I learnt about their work, it offered more inspiration than quick fix. For one, I figured that if these volunteers could put so much of their time into trying to change things for the better here in Taipei, as well as looking after and re-homing a large group of dogs and cats, then the least I could do was offer a home to this little cat. Of course now I wouldn't be without him, and I'd go as far as to say he's changed my life for the better. So, my little “Psycho” will be heading back to England with me later in the year.

However, seeing such a problem with strays in the area that I was living, I also wanted to get more involved. So I contacted the organization and met up with Michelle one day at the holding center in Shilin. Ok, so a welcome by around 50 excitable dogs might have been kind of overwhelming, but it was certainly a fun few hours spent walking some of the dogs in the riverside park just over the road. Sean explained that walking the dogs not only provided the obvious exercise for the dogs, but equally as importantly, it helps train them. The ultimate aim is to find homes for the dogs, and they have more chance if the dog/owner dynamic is already established.

I was also happy to help out at the Pet Festival this January, which not only gave me the opportunity to meet some of the other volunteers (and play with the animals!) but it was a great chance to learn about the organization. It gives you an insight into the dedication of the people involved, the public's positive reaction to the work, and also allows you to see that the adoption and sponsorship programs work – when someone invariably falls in love with one of the dogs or cats there! When you have faith in the organization and what they are doing, then you know that your bit also makes a difference- while allowing you to have some fun along the way.

Three New Committees Recently Established
Three new Committees were started up this month; Adoptions, Education and Publicity. If you would like to join one of these Committees please get in touch with the Committee Coordinator and he or she will let you know how you can help! (Please see Claire Tyrrell's article on “volunteering” for more details on how you can get involved with one of these teams.)

Adoptions Team
English Coordinator: .
Chinese Coordinator:

In an effort to increase the adoption and fostering of our animals, AT recently formed an Adoptions Team. The primary goal of the team is to find permanent and temporary homes for the animals in AnimalsTaiwan's care.

Despite the fact that he is currently living in Guatemala, has volunteered to be the English Adoptions Coordinator. , our Operations Manager, is the Chinese speaking Coordinator. Please contact Sean or Brandy if you want to help with adoptions.

The responsibilities of the Committee include the following:

  • Ensure that all animals have been vaccinated, micro-chipped, de-sexed and have an up to date bilingual adoption profile.
  • Interview and screen potential adopters.
  • Maintain contact with adopters after adoption.
  • Bring animals to events for adoption.
  • Write, translate and post adoption profiles on websites, forums.
  • Create adoption videos to post on the internet.

Education Committee
Education Committee Coordinator:

In order to make education more of a priority, AT recently established an Education Committee. The primary goals of the Committee are to promote respect and compassion for animals, reduce the overpopulation of dogs and cats by educating about the importance of de-sexing pets and the advantages of CNR, encourage individuals to adopt animals from a shelter instead of buying them from a pet store or breeder, and educate pet owners on responsible pet ownership. Patricia Kortmann, who is very active with CNR, has volunteered to be AT's new Education Coordinator.

Because the Education Committee is just in the beginning stages, it needs as many volunteers as possible to build it up and make it a reality. The Committee plans to focus its attention on four main areas: Youth Education, CNR, Adoption, and Responsible Pet Ownership.

YOUTH EDUCATION:
Young people obviously represent the future in Taiwan. For this reason, AT thinks it is very important to direct our energy into educating youth about animal welfare issues. The Committee's plan is to give workshops to Kindergarten, Elementary and Junior High age students. In order to do this we need volunteers to assist us with:

  • Writing lessons about animal welfare issues.
  • Doing workshops (this could involve visiting schools with some of our animals or giving a tour of the holding center to classes of students)
  • Organizing essay contests.
  • Designing a “Kids” section on our website. In this section we will feature artwork and essays by schoolchildren. Our plan is to can contact schools, kindergartens and cram schools to get them involved with this program. If you are a teacher who is interested in getting involved with this program and/or think your school would like to participate please contact .

CNR:
CNR (Capture-Neuter_Release) is one of the most effective methods of reducing the population of strays in Taiwan. The Committee's plan is to educate the public about the advantages of CNR, teach people how to start a CNR group in their community, and network with groups that are currently doing CNR. Patricia Kortmann, our Education Committee Coordinator, is very active in this area. Please contact about CNR.

ADOPTION:
A third area of interest for the Education Committee is adoption. Despite the fact that there are thousands and thousands of stray dogs and cats on the streets, people still continue to buy pets from a pet store or breeder. AT would like to discourage people from buying store dogs and encourage them to adopt an animal from an animal shelter. We plan to do this by dispelling some of the myths much of the public has about stray dogs and opening their eyes to the horrors that stray animals face living on the street or in a government shelter (where they are killed after ten days!)

RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP:
Oftentimes it is ignorance rather than cruelty which causes pet “owners” to mistreat their pets. By educating people about how to treat pets properly the Education Committee hopes to end some of the suffering these animals face. We will also offer pet owners practical advice such as training tips, information on good vets and kennels, advice on flying your pet overseas.

If you are interested in joining the Education Team please contact

If you are particularly interested in writing articles on any of the topics listed above please contact

Publicity Team
Publicity Coordinator:

To garner more publicity and public awareness to AT, we have recruited a new Publicity Coordinator, Alice Chen, who works as a PR consultant for her day job. Besides using the media as a channel for publicity, the Publicity Team is also planning on inviting influential individuals (bloggers/public figures) to assist in publicizing AT and its cause.

The responsibilities of the Committee include the following:

  • Compile an extensive media list
  • Build, enhance and maintain media relations
  • Write and distribute press materials
  • Identify publicity opportunities
  • Identify, communicate and work with influential individuals

If you are interested in joining the Publicity Team please contact

CNR:
