Frankie

Bloged in Submitted by Sean Tuesday July 15, 2008

Frankie was spotted as a thin-looking stray in the HsinHai/ShiDa area, but it wasn’t until a few days later that a large wound became visible on his head. A call was made to Animals Taiwan, and rescue-centre manager Brandy responded as she was in the area.

Not having any equipment in her car, Brandy couldn’t catch Frankie with a pole, net, or trap, and instead had to work on winning the nervous young dog’s trust - something that Brandy is particularly gifted at, and which was aided by the fact that Frankie was hungry and Brandy had a tin of dog food with which to entice him.

Frankie soon came to get the food, albeit cautiously, and Brandy was able to stroke him gently and eventually get a hold of his collar. But Frankie was still very tense, and, when Brandy tried to lift him into her car, the scared little guy pulled out of her grip and ran to the security of the lane where he had been living.

Luckily for Brandy, Animals Taiwan supporter Alex and her husband David were in the area, and David helped Brandy look for Frankie, who clearly needed urgent medical attention. A pet-store owner who had seen Frankie around also joined in the hunt while Brandy went back to the rescue centre to pick up a net and crate.

But it wasn’t needed. Frankie was found hanging out in his usual spot, and again succumbed to his overwhelming desire to eat; Brandy was able to coax him to within reach even more easily than last time. She picked him up, got a much better grip on him, gently put Frankie in her car, and drove him straight to the Animals Taiwan vet, Dr Yang at YangMing Veterinary Clinic in Tienmu.

Dr Yang and Brandy were both quite shocked to discover that Frankie’s injury was much worse than anyone had thought. Somehow, the blow to his head was so hard that it had actually split open his skull. He was also missing half his tail, had a neck injury that showed he had been chained up for some time, and what appeared to be burnt skin. It seems Frankie had been the victim of some extremely cruel abuse. Thankfully there are good people out there, and he was lucky that so many of them had worked so hard to get him the medical help he so urgently needed.

Frankie is recovering well from his injuries. He loves people and is a very outgoing young dog despite the abuse he endured. He’s putting on good, healthy weight, and his fur is growing back. And he is loved. Alex and David made a generous donation to sponsor his care, and the staff and volunteers at Animals Taiwan are working hard to get Frankie adopted into the kind of home he deserves so that he never has to suffer such abuse again.

If you would like to give Frankie a home, please contact Brandy today, at brandy@animalstaiwan.org or Tuesday to Saturday on 0966 876 829 (at reasonable times only, please); you can also call the Animals Taiwan rescue centre on 02 2833 8820.

The first thing that a volunteer may choose to do

Bloged in A.T. News, Eye on A.T. by Laurence Saturday July 12, 2008

In summer vacation time, apparently, the number of people who are willing to volunteer is creasing. AnimalsTaiwan welcome everyone to be our volunteers and to care animals together. However, there is a very important thing that volunteer may choose to do at the first place: take your dogs/cats to be neutered, or moreover, ask your neighbors to spay his/her cats/dogs.

One of the reasons why there are so many stray animals in Taiwan is because that the number of pets is more that the number of people who can have pets. When the total amount of pets is too many, no matter how hard people work to find a new home for our dogs and cats, there will still be some who cannot find homes. On the other hand, spaying is the effective way to break this vicious cycle, because it can reduce the total amount of pets in the future.

Go to spay your pets. Or ask your neighbor to spay his/her pets. Please consider this as the first thing that you can volunteer, and probably this is also the most important thing.

Shiba dog owners: Adopt, do not purchase

Bloged in A.T. in Action by Laurence Sunday May 18, 2008

Translated by Pamela

The upcoming Japanese movie “A tale of Mari and three puppies” featuring a group of adorable Shiba dogs has worried Shiba dog owners all over Taiwan.

Today many animal rights activists attended the movie premier, held banners and pledged to the public that “You don’t have to own a dog to love him. Please adopt rather than purchase to completely solve the stray dog problems in Taiwan.”

Few years ago, after the release of heart-warming dog-featured movies such as “Quill” and “Eight Below”, huge number of compulsive but irresponsible audience purchased large breed dogs such as Labradors and Huskies to satisfy their ignorant expectation projected from those movies. After failing to deal with the dog’s big size and their own inability of keeping dogs after all, most of these dogs ended up in public shelters. 300 large breed dogs were even sent to the public shelters in Taipei County in just a month. Now with the upcoming new “Mari” movie, it is highly possible that Shiba dogs will be victimized next.

The website “Shiba Dogs Together” with more than 3000 members had contacted the movie distributor Yos Films, asking them to show the “anti-abandonment” logos in the beginning of the movie or end credit. Yos so far hasn’t replied anything concrete yet and only agreed to “support” the pledge at movie premium. The members therefore decided to distribute posters and fliers to audience after the movie to ask them to be calm, reasonable, and understand the reality of having dogs.

Shiba dogs are medium breed, with several advantages such as being tough and loyal. However, they are also highly territorial, highly energetic, highly destructive and shed a lot. It is easy for impatient owners to abandon them after the reality kicks in.

The campaign has stirred huge feedback on the internet. Some expect Shiba dog’s celebrity owners, such as former Taipei County Magistrate Su Tseng-chang and entertainer Mickey Huang to jointly raise awareness. Also, some brutally criticize the movie distributor of being irresponsible and post their number, fax and email account on line to encourage all animal advocates to contact them and push them to understand the “gravity of abandonment caused by dog-featured movies”
